This computer has been previously synced with an iphone or another IOS device

I’m using iOS 5 beta 5 on my iPhone and I encountered an issue where whenever I plugged my iPhone into iTunes I was prompted to either setup my iPhone as a new device or restore it.

I was still able to do wireless backups so this wasn’t a problem. I did restore of my latest backup. The problem was, even after the restore it still kept brining up the same screen saying “This computer has been previously synced with an iphone or another IOS device.”

Long story short here is how I corrected:

  • Plug your phone into iTunes
  • Click setup as a new device
  • Immediately unplug your phone from the computer
  • Give it about 30 seconds and iTunes will give a message (I don’t remember the specific, but regarding you unplugging the device and it not completing)
  • Plug your phone back in
  • Viola! no restore occurred and you can access everything again
I have my phone setup to wifi sync and I notice this started happening when I unchecked “Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected.” Everything is running good again.

I am having the same issue as mentioned. I haven’t tried the unplugging while setting up as a new phone yet. The backups I have done before upgrading to the iOS 5 are not complete. All my contact info seems to be correct however none of my music is there and I had to reload all of my apps from the itunes on the phone already purchased. I’m wondering, since I don’t have a good backup it seems, if this article will fix the issue or if the phone will come up the same.

On “This computer has been previously synced with an iphone” answer: When you say “immediately” unplug your device from the computer, should you right click on the device and hit eject first?

I was scared as hell to try this too. I upgraded my 4s fine, but my 4th Gen iPad was having the problem described above. I just tried the “Select Setup as New” option and yanked the cord right after hitting continue and it worked like a charm. Thank you. This is an iPad I use for work, with itunes on a Windows7 PC. So glad it worked. Thanks again.

It took me a couple of tries because my phone was still being funky. Then all of the sudden it was syncing like it is normally supposed to do. I was able to immediately back it up to my computer in case this happens again. Thank you so much for the tip!!!!
